New study released

Claudia Orlandini News EASME, report

Released: Study on the role of Women in Fisheries in the Mediterranean and Black Sea,

conducted for the EASME/EMFF.

9th of March 2019

Katia Frangoudes

The study aims to meet the following specific objectives:

– identify the distinct roles that women play in the fisheries sector; – quantify (as much as possible) the presence of women in the sector; – analyse the current legal framework in 10 Member States (Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Spain, Bulgaria, and Romania) concerning women’s participation in the sector; – identify the challenges and the opportunities for promoting women’s role and presence in the sector; and – formulate clear recommendations to improve the status of women and help their access to this sector’s labour market.

With this study, the European Commission seeks to address the need to “improve working conditions and promote the role of women in the fisheries sector and aquaculture” that was identified in the MedFish4Ever Ministerial Declaration signed by the Commission and Member States in March 2017.

The study should also contribute to the Regional Plan of Action for Small-Scale Fisheries in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (RPOA-SSF) launched in Malta via a High-Level Conference in September 2018. This study sheds a light on women’s presence in catching, aquaculture, processing, and fisheries-related activities which had not been well documented so far, particularly in the Mediterranean and Black Sea basins. The insights provided in this study add value to the existing knowledge-base in relation to women’s presence and role in EU fisheries.
